Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
